Aggregate numbers tell you the size of the pool. They don't tell you whether your account is performing — for that, you need the account's own engagement rate against its size bracket.
What the aggregate hides

Most followed accounts

Top 10 most followed Instagram accounts

The leaderboard at the very top of Instagram is unusually stable — the same handles trade slots within the top 10 quarter after quarter. New entrants are rare; departures are even rarer. The number that moves most isn't the order, it's how each handle's content cadence and audience match drives growth velocity.

Age distribution

The 18–34 bracket still dominates, but the 35+ slice has grown materially over the last several years. The "Instagram is for young people" story now comes with real caveats — over a third of users are 35 or older. Use the Profile Analyzer to see how a specific account's audience skews.

Users by gender

Gender split

Meta's ad-platform demographic data is reported as a binary, which is a limitation of the source rather than a position on gender. The split is close to even with a slight female lean.

Looking at a specific account?

These aggregate numbers won't tell you whether a single Instagram account is performing — for that, you need the account's actual engagement rate, posting cadence, and audience benchmarks. igtrackr's free toolkit does that for any public handle.

Methodology + sources

How we sourced this

Instagram demographic numbers vary 5–15% between sources depending on whether they measure monthly active users, ad-reach audience, or self-reported survey samples. We default to DataReportal for global aggregates because they publish methodology alongside numbers, and to Statista for country-by-country splits because they have the most up-to-date Meta-sourced ranking. Where Meta's own earnings calls disclose a figure (Reels engagement rate share, total MAU), we cite the investor call directly.

The country, age, and gender tables on this page reflect data reported between late 2024 and early 2025. When a more recent DataReportal Digital report drops, this page is re-verified end-to-end and the "Last verified" date at the top is bumped.
